Embracing this ancient means of communication via subtext fit in perfectly with the Victorian ethos and propensity to utilize symbolism to express their feelings. Rose, depending on their color, have represented love in its many forms throughout time, and with the layered meaning of colors conveying messages without words.  While the Victorian language of flowers is the most well known lore about communicating messages via flowers, ascribing symbolic meaning to flowers and roses in particular dates back far beyond the 19th century.  In ancient Hellenistic mythology, Cupid gave a rose to Harpocrates (the god of silence) so he would not reveal the secrets of Venus, thus beginning its legend as a symbol of secrecy.
