A large sterling silver engine turned smoking compendium. This is one of the finest and most well made table smoking boxes we have handled, and prime Art Deco design from height of the period. The box comprises of the classic two compartments lined with cedar wood to keep moisture and freshness to the tobacco. One for cigars, and one for cigarettes. The cigarette side has the original cedar wood divider that can be removed to also store cigars in.
Dividing the two hinged compartments are a cigar cutter and match safe, or vesta. Both of which are fully hallmarked and are removable from the box. There is a striking plate on the outside of the vesta to strike non-safety matches. The cutter has both a straight or V cut option, is sprung and collects the cut piece inside to be cleared when desired.
The body is heavily engine turned, as was popular during the Art Deco movement, and is very clean in its design, with beautiful squared proportioned handles. The interior of the lids are lemon gilded which helps prevent tarnishing from the oxidizing from the tobacco and oxygen. The condition of the box through is impeccable. It would make a wonderful addition for any study or library.
There are a series of hallmarks thought out the piece denoting the sterling silver content, and that it was made in London, England in 1938 by Padgett & Braham Limited.
