With its heart-shaped leaves, the violet is known as a symbol of love and devotion—aptly representing those born in the same month as Valentine's Day. Its purple-blue petals are the same hue as the amethyst, February's birthstone.
 
Sweet scented and appearing first in early spring, violets can bloom nearly year-round with love and care. This edible flower has been used by ancient cultures the world over to sweeten foods and make wines, as well as in herbal remedies and medicines. In Victorian times, the violet was symbolic of humility and fortune. Giving violets as a gift was said to be a declaration to always be true.
